They’re off! The builders have moved in to the COOP site with all their heavy machinery to start the renovation of the old Wine Cellars and the Union Sociale building. The two iconic buildings date back to the late 1950s and early 1960s and represent some 20,000 m² of renovation work. The first part involves removing all the asbestos, which means taking down the asbestos cement panels lining the exterior of the buildings, before tackling the interior, where asbestos is to be found in parts such as the elevator brake shoes, boiler seals and flooring. This initial stage should be completed by January 2018, at which point the actual renovation work can get underway.
The Union Sociale building will become the new Centre for studying and conserving the collections belonging to Strasbourg’s museums. The Wine Cellars will be turned into a multipurpose area with workspaces, rest and relaxation areas and a large function room for cultural events. Work is due to be completed in the final quarter of 2019.
